Forgiveness

After Ryan informed his parents that he and Pete had reconciled, they ordered them both to join them for dinner. Pete knew they had to go, but he dreaded seeing them. He’d felt bad for disappointing Patrick after the lovely afternoon they had spent together all those months ago, but at the time, it was necessary.

In the car on the way to the Walsh’s home, Pete kept fiddling with his clothes. “You look fine, sweetheart,” Ryan reassured him. “I know Papa will forgive you after he sees how happy we are to be back together. Father may take more time to warm up to you again, but Papa will make sure he does.”

When they arrived, Beatrice directed them to meet Ryan’s parents in the study. There they found Patrick and Reginald with dour expressions. “Good, you’re finally here,” Reginald said gruffly. “Sit.”

With his heart thudding loudly in his ears, Pete let Ryan guide him to the couch, and they sat down together. Both Patrick and Reginald remained standing, glaring at them. “So, I see you have come to your senses,” Reginald said to Pete. “The question remains, should we allow Ryan to risk taking a chance on you again?”

“Mr. Walsh, I am so sorry—” Pete tried to apologize.

“As you should be, young man,” Reginald continued. “However, we have our family’s reputation—”

“Father!” Ryan interrupted in protest. “You will not dictate who I spend my life with just for your damned reputation!”

That’s when Pete noticed a mischievous glint in Patrick’s eye. He could tell the omega was struggling to control the stern face he had, and once Patrick realized Pete had noticed, he burst out laughing, making Pete smile with relief.

“Papa?” Ryan asked in confusion, as Reginald also broke into a hearty chuckle.

“They’re putting us on,” Pete explained.

“The look on your faces!” Patrick said. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen two more terrified expressions!”

“Papa!” Ryan said in shock, finally catching on.

Patrick came over and pulled Pete up into a hug. “I’m so happy you’re back together.”

After hugging Patrick back, he smiled gratefully. “I am, too. Thank you for understanding and letting us postpone that ceremony. It helped me a lot to have that extra time.”

“We must get together soon and get back to planning!” Patrick enthused. “I was a bit disappointed at the delay, but a late summer ceremony is ideal.”

“I thought so, too,” Pete agreed.

Patrick poured each of them a drink from a decanter that sat on the coffee table. “A toast to the happy couple!”

After clinking glasses, Pete relaxed back into the couch, with Ryan’s arm around his shoulders. When he took his first sip, the unexpected burn surprised him, and he began to cough and sputter unexpectedly.

Ryan set down their drinks and ran to get him a glass of water from a nearby pitcher. “I’m sorry, I should have warned you,” Ryan apologized before explaining to his parents. “Pete’s not used to alcohol yet. He’s only had some wine so far.”

“Oh, heavens! You should have told me, Ryan,” Patrick reprimanded.
